Bhubaneswar: Union minister of state for social justice and empowerment Ramdas Athawale on Wednesday met Odisha chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi here and reviewed implementation of various social welfare schemes during a one-day visit to the state.Athawale discussed issues related to social justice and welfare delivery with Majhi.
The chief minister assured full coordination between the Centre and state in all public welfare initiatives to further strengthen the social security framework.
He highlighted recent steps taken by the state, including the inclusion of 6 lakh additional beneficiaries under the Madhu Babu Pension Scheme and the provision of an extra 5kg of rice under the Chief Minister’s Annapurna Scheme.Later, chairing a high-level review meeting with senior officials from multiple departments, including social security and empowerment of persons with disabilities (SSEPD), ST and SC Development, panchayati raj and drinking water, and Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), Athawale assessed the progress of key schemes.The minister reviewed programmes targeted at scheduled castes (SCs) and other backward classes (OBCs), seeking details on scholarships, higher education opportunities and reservation in education and employment.
He appreciated the state’s recent decision to enhance reservation to 22.5% for scheduled tribes, 16.25% for scheduled castes and 11.25% for socially and educationally backward classes (SEBCs) from the current academic year.Expressing satisfaction over measures to support victims of atrocities and social discrimination, Athawale noted growing awareness among SC and ST communities about their rights.
Officials informed him that under the Centre’s inter-caste marriage incentive scheme, eligible couples receive Rs 2.5 lakh with 4,958 couples benefiting during 2024–25 and 2025–26.The minister also reviewed welfare initiatives for persons with disabilities.
He was informed that nearly 90,283 persons in Odisha are receiving pensions under centrally-supported schemes.
