UK heatwave live: June record temperature could be broken yet again as Met Office extends extreme heat warning

The record for the hottest June day could be broken yet again as the Met Office has extended its red extreme heat warning.

Temperatures reached 36.1C at Gosport in Hampshire on Wednesday, after records for the hottest June day were broken four times.

A rare red weather Met Office alert for extreme heat stretching from London across to Somerset and Swansea, and up towards Birmingham, is in place until midnight on Thursday. An amber warning for heat in south-east England has also been extended into Saturday until 9pm.

Thousands of children are set to remain at home after schools across the country, including 100 in Somerset, decided it is too hot for the classroom.

Network Rail has advised passengers to only travel if “absolutely necessary” amid the red weather warning.

The Met Office has also issued a yellow thunderstorm warning for Thursday evening across the South West as forecasters predict 60mph winds.

Requests not to use hosepipes are in place across Kent, Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire as South East Water manages increased demand due to the heatwave.
