Silchar: A truck driver, believed to be from Punjab, was killed in a suspected hit-and-run on the Silchar-Haflong national highway at Madhurapul on Tuesday night, police said.The man’s bloodstained body was found beside the highway by local residents, who alerted police.
A team reached the spot, recovered the body, and sent it to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for an autopsy.Residents said the deceased was known in the area as “Sardarji” and worked as a truck driver.
They claimed he was from Punjab, though his identity has not yet been officially confirmed.Police suspect the man was walking along the highway when he was hit by an unidentified vehicle, which then fled the scene.
Investigators said the exact circumstances surrounding the death are still unclear and are being examined.A local resident said he did not witness the accident and learned about it only after noticing the body on the roadside.
He added that it remains uncertain who was driving the vehicle involved or whether other factors contributed to the death.Police have registered a case and launched an investigation to determine the cause of death and identify the vehicle involved.
