Tripura govt suspends 8 police officers over allegations of custodial torture, bribery

Agartala: The Tripura govt suspended eight police personnel, including two officers in charge (OCs), after sharp rebukes from the Tripura High Court over alleged custodial torture and a Rs 2 lakh bribery demand linked to an Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) building dispute.Home secretary Abhishek Singh told the court that East Agartala PS OC Subrata Debnath, Women PS OC Shakuntala Debnath, SI Saikat De, ASI Anand Debbarma, constables Suman Acharya and Mithun Rudrapal, and SPOs Ripul Debnath and Shubhankar Dhar were suspended following an enquiry.

Arrested SPO Joy Debnath and AMC temporary task force worker Rabindra Narayan Ghosh were terminated and remain in judicial custody.

The court also issued a show-cause notice to under secretary Samarendra Debbarma over an allegedly misleading affidavit.The case stems from a complaint by Banamalipur resident Ratna Roy, who alleged that an AMC worker demanded a Rs 2 lakh bribe over a building dispute.

Following non-payment, a police-led group raided her house on April 4.
