TN disability rights association announces protest over MGNREGA, demands exception from census duties

Madurai: The Tamil Nadu Association for the Rights of All Types of Persons with Disabilities and Caregivers has announced a black flag protest on July 1, condemning the renaming of the Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGA).A resolution to this effect was adopted at the metropolitan district committee meeting of the association on Tuesday.The association also demanded that monthly financial assistance be provided immediately to persons with disabilities who have been waiting for the benefit from the revenue department for the past two years.District secretary A Balamurugan said that according to reports the national population census work in Madurai district is expected to begin in August, and that teachers and govt officials from various departments are being considered for appointment as enumerators, supervisors, and staff, with biodata forms currently being collected.“Persons with disabilities are also likely to be included among the teachers and govt employees assigned to this work.
