The Geno Smith assault case takes another twist as detectives are back on it

New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith is at the center of an active police investigation in Florida, after a woman accused him of assault over the weekend, and after 48 hours of conflicting statements from police about whether the case was even open.

Here's the full timeline, as confirmed by police and multiple outlets.Davie police confirm the case is now "active"It started Sunday, when a woman who identified herself as "Kristen" posted a roughly 85-second video on Instagram accusing Smith of attacking her at his Davie, Florida, home.

Police confirmed officers responded to a battery call at Smith's residence around 4:40 p.m.

ET that day, but no one was arrested at the scene. What happened next got messy fast.

On Monday, police told one outlet the case was "closed." Hours later, a different police statement called it "not an active case, but still being reviewed." By Tuesday morning, the department reversed course entirely, confirming in an official statement that the case is now active: "We were informed yesterday evening that, during review, it was determined that this case is being further investigated by detectives.

It is active and we cannot release any additional information at this time." As of the latest reporting, that investigation is ongoing, with multiple detectives now involved. What happens next — for Smith, and for the JetsNo charges have been filed, and Smith hasn't publicly addressed the allegation himself.

    The Jets also haven't commented.

Separately, the woman behind the original post followed up on Monday with another claim, accusing Smith of refusing to hand over his home security footage to police, which hasn't been independently confirmed.Even if the police case eventually closes without charges, that's not the end of the story for the NFL.

The league can investigate independently under its Personal Conduct Policy, on its own timeline, regardless of what happens criminally.

That matters here: Smith, who returned to the Jets via trade in March, is currently the team's expected Week 1 starter, with a thin and unproven group - Brady Cook, Bailey Zappe, and rookie Cade Klubnik behind him.

Training camp opens in about five weeks. This is very much a developing story, and it's already changed shape twice in two days, from "case closed" to "still being reviewed" to now fully active with detectives digging in.

The police report itself still hasn't been made public, Smith hasn't said a word, and the Jets are staying silent too.

Until one of those things changes, the safest bet is to treat anything you read here as a snapshot, not the finish line.
