Forty people have drowned in heatwave-related deaths in France since 18 June officials have said, as temperatures hit record levels in several major cities and the heatwave reached a peak in several European countries.

Measures have been put in place across western Europe in order to help people manage the heat.

The BBC's Pierre-Antoine Denis reports from Nice where a very high heat alert is in place, with temperatures peaking between 30C and 35C (86F and 95F).
