    Trichy: A private school van driver was arrested near Thanjavur for rashly driving a vehicle carrying students while under the influence of alcohol on Sunday.

    Following the incident, the central zone inspector general of police (IGP) issued an advisory to schools to check the sobriety of drivers before allowing them to operate school vehicles.According to police, around 25 students from a private school in Ayyampettai travelled in the van to the Palace cricket ground in Thanjavur to play a match on Sunday.

    Mohamed Yasin, 22, from Sakkarapalli, drove the van.

    After the match, Yasin allegedly drove the van rashly during the return trip.

    While passing near Karanthai, locals noticed the negligent driving and intercepted the vehicle.

    They immediately informed Thanjavur East police.Officers rushed to the spot, found that the driver was under the influence of alcohol, and arrested him.

    The students were safely transported to school in another vehicle.Police registered a case under sections 281 and 125(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for rash driving and endangering lives and seized the van.

    The van driver was remanded in judicial custody.

    School correspondent Mohamed Ibrahim was also booked.On Tuesday, IGP V Balakrishnan instructed owners of private schools to strictly follow the Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicles (Regulation and Control of School Buses) Special Rules 2012 while operating school vehicles.
