Prayagraj: Climbing mobile towers and water tanks to stage protests in Pratapgarh could now land you in jail, with police launching a strict crackdown on the rising trend of such risky demonstrations. In the past 72 hours alone, Pratapgarh police have sent five people — including two women — to jail on charges of trespassing, breach of peace, endangering public safety and causing disruptions. The action comes amid more than 17 such incidents reported across the district in the past 40 days.“From relationship disputes and land conflicts to alleged administrative apathy, both youths and adults are increasingly climbing mobile towers and water tanks to force authorities, families, or other stakeholders to act.

This is a dangerous trend and a serious concern for both law enforcement and mental health professionals,” a senior police officer told TOI.He added that such incidents have been reported in both rural and urban areas, with a majority involving couples. In the latest case on Tuesday, a 20-year-old woman climbed a BSNL tower in Malaqa Rajjakpur village after being rebuked by her friend’s mother over their relationship.

She later refused to come down, prompting police intervention, and was subsequently arrested for allegedly obstructing a public servant on duty.Last week, in another incident in the Kotwali area, a 22-year-old woman climbed an overhead water tank after her boyfriend blocked her phone number.

She descended only after police brought the boyfriend to the spot.In at least six cases, women have climbed towers or water tanks to pressure authorities into releasing their partners who were jailed in various cases.Pratapgarh police have now issued strict instructions to station house officers to register cases against such protesters.“Water tanks and mobile towers are meant for public utility.

Anyone climbing these structures to protest or press demands will face legal consequences,” the official said.Stay updated with the latest Prayagraj news.
