Police abandon booth opposite GRH due to unsanitary conditions

Madurai: Plagued by a stench of urine, a lack of power supply, and a rampant mosquito menace, the police traffic booth opposite the Govt Rajaji Hospital in Madurai has been rendered unusable, forcing officers onto the streets to manage chaotic flyover traffic.The police booth on Panagal Road has become a spot for urination for commuters and patient attenders who visit the hospital.

Police personnel have not been using the booth, leaving them with no place to rest.

They also complained of a mosquito menace as the booth was situated near a sewage canal.Talking to TOI, police personnel posted at the booth said, “We have been facing the problems for the past four months.

Due to the ongoing UGD work, there has been no power at the booth during the summer.

We can’t stay inside the booth and are forced to step out and continue our duty outside without basic amenities.

We don’t have any shelter for the upcoming rainy days.”“If the booth is operable, we can stay inside and carry out the task of regulating traffic using the speaker and microphone,” the official added.The ongoing Goripalayam flyover project has worsened vehicular traffic on Panagal Road.

As riders frequently violate rules near GRH, the deployment of police personnel at the stretch is necessary.
