Bhubaneswar: The Crime Branch on Tuesday arrested a key accused in connection with the mob lynching of railway constable Soumya Ranjan Swain (32) in Balianta on the city outskirts on May 7.The accused, Bibhuti Bhusan Parida (26), a resident of Benupur in Balianta area, was nabbed from his relative’s place in Cuttack, police sources said.With his arrest, the total number of people held in connection with the case has risen to 19.
While Balianta police earlier arrested 11 men, CB has picked eight.Swain was lynched by a mob after allegations surfaced that he tried to rape a 22-year-old woman on the roadside.
The incident unfolded in front of police personnel, prompting the suspension of four officers and the transfer of the Balianta inspector-in-charge.According to officials, Parida was present near a hotel in Balianta when he noticed a crowd gathered on the roadside.
On hearing that Swain had allegedly tried to rape a woman in broad daylight, Parida joined the mob and assaulted the constable.“We have clear evidence against him after analysing video footage.
He was seen hitting the victim’s head and face repeatedly.
He had been absconding,” a Crime Branch official said. “We are still tracking more suspects.
