North Korea has officially commissioned the Choe Hyon, a 5,000-ton destroyer that leader Kim Jong Un says represents a major step forward in the country's naval and nuclear ambitions. Speaking at a ceremony in the western port city of Nampo, Kim declared that the nuclear armament of North Korea's navy is progressing as planned and described the warship as a symbol of the country's growing military strength. According to North Korean state media, the destroyer is equipped with advanced anti-aircraft and anti-ship weapons, as well as ballistic and cruise missiles that are capable of carrying nuclear warheads. The vessel has undergone multiple weapons tests in recent months, including launches of what Pyongyang described as nuclear-capable cruise missiles.
