JSW MG Motor India appears set to broaden its SUV lineup with the introduction of a new three-row model.
The company has confirmed that it will unveil a new energy vehicle in India on July 16, and indications suggest it could be based on the Wuling Starlight 560 plug-in hybrid SUV that is already on sale in international markets.
Although MG has not yet disclosed the final name for the Indian market. The development comes months after MG filed a design patent for the Starlight 560 in India.
While the automaker has not officially revealed the identity of the upcoming vehicle, the patent filing and recent testing activity point towards the SUV being a strong contender for the brand’s next major launch in the country. The design patent showcases a modern-looking SUV with a prominent front-end treatment.
It features a blacked-out fascia, a rectangular grille and high-mounted LED headlamps.
The SUV also gets black body cladding around the wheel arches, multi-spoke alloy wheels, blacked-out pillars and roof rails, giving it a rugged yet contemporary appearance.Globally, the Starlight 560 is positioned as a sizeable family SUV.
Measuring over 4.7 metres in length and riding on a wheelbase of more than 2.8 metres, it is expected to offer generous cabin space along with a three-row seating configuration.
If launched in India, it could enter the highly competitive segment currently occupied by models such as the Mahindra XUV 7XO.Powering the SUV is expected to be a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
Internationally, the setup combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 104 hp and 130 Nm with an electric motor mounted on the front axle.
Together, the system delivers a combined output of 194 hp and 230 Nm.
MG claims the SUV can sprint from 0 to 100 kmph in 9.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 170 kmph. The plug-in hybrid system is paired with a 20.5 kWh battery pack, which is claimed to provide up to 100 km of electric-only driving range.
A heavily camouflaged test vehicle believed to be based on the same SUV has already been spotted on Indian roads.
