Man held for raping mentally challenged minor

Rourkela: A 40-year-old married man was arrested in Sundargarh district on Saturday for allegedly raping a 14-year-old mentally challenged girl multiple times and making her pregnant.

The minor is around four months pregnant and is currently living in a shelter home under official care.Police said the accused, a neighbour of the survivor, allegedly assaulted the girl multiple times when she was alone at home while her mother was away for work.According to the police, the minor had earlier become pregnant nearly two years ago, but the matter was not reported to police at the time.

The latest incident came to light when the girl’s mother took her to a local medicine shop on May 23 seeking medication to terminate the pregnancy.

The shopkeeper alerted the authorities.Subsequently, the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), along with local officials and police, intervened and rescued the minor on May 24.

She was first taken to a one-stop centre in Rourkela and later shifted to a shelter home in Sundargarh.

During questioning, the girl’s mother told the police about her suspicion regarding their neighbour.The accused was medically examined and following interrogation, he was arrested.
