'It's not Indian food': Japanese woman blames overeating for foreigners' upset stomachs after Indian meals

A Japanese woman living in Gurgaon has gone viral for her humorous defence of Indian food.

She shared that she often encountered questions such as "I might get an upset stomach if I go to India" or "Isn't Indian food kind of risky?"However, she said that the upset stomachs had nothing to do with the Indian food and more with how people end up overeating it in a state of hunger and taste.

In an X post that is currently going viral online, she shared that most people concluded that they get an upset stomach after Indian food "because of the poor hygiene." "That really rubs me the wrong way," she added.

The woman explained that Indian food is heavy on the oil and contains strong spices.

Firstly, it does not sit well with Japanese stomachs naturally and secondly, since people eat "too much of it", beyond what their stomachs can handle, they end up having upset stomachs. "I think it's the exact same logic as getting an upset stomach from eating hotpot on a business trip to China🇨🇳 (Sorry, this analogy only lands for those who get it)" she reasoned.

She added that when people visit the country after a long flight, they are exhausted and eat a ton of oily, heavily spiced dishes back to back, the gut freaks out and causes the upset stomach. "I get it, it's delicious, I totally get it! Especially when you're on a business trip or something, the restaurants that locals or expats take you to are usually legit places, so it doesn't really feel like "unsanitary conditions" are the reason for tummy troubles," she wrote.

She recommended two things for business travellers and tourists.

First was to not overeat. "Absolutely do not try to match the portions that Indians or Japanese expats living there eat! If you could hold back a bit at first...!" she advised.

Secondly, she suggested putting in a break between Indian food and not eating Indian meals back to back. "About once every three meals (aka once a day), slot in some familiar, gentle food like Japanese or Korean cuisine that you're used to" she added.

Social media reactionsMany users agreed with the woman's perspective. "You just nailed it.

Whichever part of the world you eat, never eat beyond 85% of full stomach.

That's the basic thumb rule," wrote one. "Your body actually healing after eating Indian curries.

    Turmeric etc are anti-inflammatory.

The typical Western diet is low fiber compared to Indian meals.

Microbiome mismatch: your stomach needs a different set of bacteria to digest.

Soluble vs. insoluble fibre: Indian food is Soluble," added another. "I see.

Hot pot, coming tomorrow, huh? lol," quipped one.Get the latest movie news, reviews, and celebrity updates.
