Iran has claimed it will close the Strait of Hormuz to tankers, citing alleged ceasefire violations by the U.S. and Israel, according to its semi-official Mehr news agency.
The top joint military command, Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, said this closure is the “first step” and warned of further measures if “aggression” continues.
US Vice President JD Vance has indicated there is no evidence yet that Iran is closing the critical waterway, which typically handles a fifth of the world's oil supply.
Peace talks are currently taking place in Switzerland between an envoy of President Donald Trump, Steve Witkoff, and Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi, aiming to secure a permanent truce.
Trump reportedly instructed Israel to agree to a ceasefire with Hezbollah in Lebanon, amidst U.S. intelligence concerns that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could undermine the U.S. deal with Iran.
