Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents allegedly left two dogs unattended for a week without food or water in an Oklahoma apartment after detaining their owners.
The owner of the dogs was taken by ICE in January, when the agency was still under the guiding hand of former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, according to PunchUp.
The agents reportedly did not alert animal control to the presence of the dogs, leaving them in distress. A neighbor discovered the abandoned animals and alerted the apartment manager, leading to their rescue by animal welfare officials.
A Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokesperson stated that detainees are offered opportunities to arrange pet care, but ICE reportedly lacks specific protocols for impounding animals.
Reports indicate a consistent increase in pet seizures and surrenders in areas experiencing heightened ICE operations, coinciding with increased agency activity.
