Panaji: The transformation of salinity-affected Khazan lands in Merces into productive farming systems through scientific interventions such as land shaping, rainwater harvesting, soil amelioration, crop diversification, and fish farming has recently become a model example for experts in the state to learn from.Director, ICAR-CCARI, Goa, Parveen Kumar, said, “The institute is preparing a comprehensive policy paper on the revival of Khazan lands of Goa.
The document will compile scientific evidence, field experiences, and stakeholder recommendations to support policy decisions for the conservation, restoration, and productive use of Khazan ecosystems, thereby benefiting farmers, govt agencies, and other stakeholders.”The ICAR–CCARI, along with Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) and NABARD, Goa, recently held a stakeholder meeting on the revival and sustainable management of Goa’s Khazan lands, as part of which they undertook a field visit to the site at Merces, where scientific land-shaping and integrated farming system (IFS) model for the revival of Khazan lands was demonstrated.Practical demonstrations of soil and pond water salinity measurements were conducted to showcase the effectiveness of the interventions in reclaiming and revitalising Khazan ecosystems.TOI had reported the success story of the Merces farm in Oct last year, wherein Joaquim D’Souza, a progressive farmer, implemented scientific interventions in the successful project.Mahesh Patil, chairman, agriculture, fisheries, animal husbandry and Food Processing Committee (2025–27), GCCI, emphasised the importance of developing a strong and actionable policy framework.“GCCI, along with its committee members and representatives from various state departments, will actively contribute to the process so that a comprehensive policy document can be submitted to the Goa govt for consideration and future action,” he added. You Can Also Check: Gold Rate in Goa | Silver Rate in Goa | Bank Holidays in Goa | Public Holidays in Goa | Petrol Price in GoaStay updated with the latest Goa news.
