Hong Kong police have arrested a 15-year-old boy and his father in Wan Chai after officers intercepted the teenager behind the wheel at a late-night traffic checkpoint.

Officers from the force’s Hong Kong Island traffic section set up a roadblock at the junction of Marsh Road and Hung Hing Road at around 10pm on Tuesday.

During the routine traffic enforcement operation, police stopped a car and found the driver was a minor.

The 15-year-old non-Chinese boy was arrested on suspicion of driving without a licence and without third-party insurance.

His 48-year-old father was also arrested on suspicion of aiding and abetting unlicensed driving and driving without third-party insurance. Both remain in custody for investigation, the police said.

According to the Transport Department’s website, the minimum age for obtaining a driving licence is 18.

Driving without a licence carries a fine of up to HK$5,000 (US$637) and 3 months’ imprisonment for a first offence, rising to HK$10,000 12 months behind bars for subsequent convictions, under the Road Traffic Ordinance.

Driving without third-party insurance is punishable by a fine of HK$10,000 and 12 months in jail.

Offenders will also be disqualified from holding or obtaining a licence to drive a motor vehicle for one to three years from the date of conviction, depending on the court’s decision, under the Motor Vehicles Insurance (Third Party Risks) Ordinance.
