New Delhi: As the city is predicted to witness rain and thunderstorms till the month-end, the heatwave season is likely over.
Parts of the city experienced two spells of heatwave conditions this summer, with base station Safdarjung recording two heatwave days.
This was the lowest number of heatwave days recorded at the base station in the past three summers. No heatwave day was recorded in 2023, while Safdarjung reported three heatwave days in the 2025 summer and 14 in 2024, shows the India Meteorological Department data. The city saw two spells of heatwaves in this season -- one each in April and May, and none in June.
Some areas of Delhi reeled under three consecutive heatwave days from April 23 to 25.
However, Safdarjung saw one heatwave day on April 25 when the mercury climbed to 42.8 degrees Celsius.Another four-day streak of heatwave conditions was reported in parts of Delhi from May 18 to 21.
However, Safdarjung recorded just one such day on May 19 when it touched 45.1 degrees Celsius.
It was also the season’s highest temperature.
Among the weather observatories in Delhi, Ridge station in north Delhi reeled under the heatwave conditions for the maximum number of days at five.Heatwaves are mostly recorded from the second week of April to mid-June.
However, the intensity of heatwave conditions this summer was relatively lower than in recent years, largely due to frequent spells of rain, thunderstorms and associated cloud cover.Met officials said frequent western disturbances this season kept mercury in check.
In April, the city recorded spells of rain in the first and last weeks, witnessing excess rainfall of 84%.
Similarly, intermittent rain and overcast skies caused the day temperature to remain below 40 degrees Celsius in the first two weeks of May.
June has been no different, with the mercury surpassing 40 degrees Celsius only on seven days so far.“There are chances of very light to light rain, thunderstorm and gusty winds over the next few days.
No significant change in the maximum temperature is expected,” said a Met official.IMD defines a heatwave day when the maximum is 4.5 degrees and more above normal temperature and the maximum is at least 40 degrees Celsius.
A heatwave is also considered if the maximum temperature touches 45 degrees Celsius or above.
A severe heatwave is declared when the maximum is 6.5 degrees and more above normal. You Can Also Check: Gold Rate in Delhi | Silver Rate in Delhi | Bank Holidays in Delhi | Public Holidays in Delhi | Delhi AQI | Weather in Delhi | Petrol Price in Delhi | Diesel Price in Delhi | CNG Price in Delhi | LPG Price in DelhiStay updated with the latest Delhi news.
