HC grants Munshi anticipatory bail, denies relief to husband

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday granted anticipatory bail to former MLA Aditi Munshi, taking into consideration that she has a four-month-old child, but denied the same relief to her husband, Debraj Chakraborty, in a case relating to alleged disproportionate assets.Justice Jay Sengupta directed Munshi to cooperate with the investigation, surrender her passport before the lower court and stay outside the jurisdiction of Baguihati police station until the matter is resolved.

The couple has also been directed to submit their addresses and contact details before the concerned court.Appearing for the state, additional advocate general Rajdeep Mazumder alleged that the couple concealed assets and furnished false information in their election affidavits. “They possess assets worth over Rs 100 crore, comprising more than 90 properties.

There are also allegations of land grabbing,” Mazumder submitted.According to the state, 19 properties are registered in Debraj’s name and three in Munshi’s.

The prosecution also referred to a five-acre plot in Kalimpong, allegedly held in a relative’s name and sold shortly before the election.Senior advocate Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya, appearing for Munshi, argued that the allegations lacked merit.
