Patna: In a major relief for industries, the Bihar govt is set to allow the import and transportation of methyl alcohol for industrial use through a regulated approval mechanism.
The prohibition, excise and registration department is preparing a standard operating procedure (SOP) to facilitate the movement of methyl alcohol to and from other states.
The proposal is expected to be implemented after cabinet approval.Prohibition, excise and registration minister Madan Sahni said the govt was formulating a policy to boost industrial activity while ensuring strict monitoring of the chemical’s use.Methyl alcohol, also known as methanol or wood alcohol, is widely used in industries such as paints, chemicals and manufacturing.
Following the enforcement of the state’s liquor prohibition law in 2016, industries faced difficulties in procuring and transporting methanol because of concerns over its possible misuse in illicit activities.According to departmental sources, the industries department had urged the excise department to establish a clear regulatory framework. “To address these issues, the industries department had urged the excise department to create a clear regulatory framework.
The upcoming SOP will allow industries to obtain permits or licenses for transporting and using specified quantities of methyl alcohol based on their operational requirements,” sources said.Officials of the prohibition department will monitor usage of the chemical.
