TIMES NEWS NETWORKMangaluru: Health minister UT Khader said that the govt has plans to set up a dedicated committee to address various challenges in the disability sector, especially for children with special needs.He was speaking after inaugurating the ‘DNA Karavali Dhwani’, a programme on disability awareness and inclusive development, organised by Disability NGO Alliance, Parents for Inclusive Development and Arivu Trust in association with Lions Club Mangaluru Ashokanagar at Ashoka Lions Seva Bhavan on Tuesday.The minister said the govt is open to suggestions from the organisations and parents of the special children. “Soon after taking charge of the health and family welfare department, I have directed officials to give emphasis to implementation of various govt schemes for special children.
Hence, a special committee will be formed to accept suggestions and arrange govt schemes for children with special needs,” he said.Parents of Children With Special Needs and Special Parents Support Group submitted a memorandum to the minister.
Parents demanded the minister to strengthen facilities, vocational training and inclusive infrastructure for children and adults with special needs.
They sought immediate intervention of the govt to improve the quality of life,independence, and inclusion of persons with disabilities in Dakshina Kannada.“There is limited infrastructure for providing meaningful employment to adults with special needs.
We request the establishment of sheltered workshops, supported employment programmes, and partnerships with industries and local businesses to create job opportunities.
Public places, parks and govt offices should have accessible toilets designed forpersons with disabilities.
