Fuel fears charge EV shift in Madurai, Trichy

Madurai/Trichy: Madurai and Trichy are together adding around 33 electric vehicles (EVs) a day in 2026, up from about 20 a day in 2025, as rising fuel concerns, government incentives and improved charging technology encourage more buyers to switch to battery-powered vehicles.Official data show Madurai registered 3,800 EVs between January and June 2026, nearly matching the 4,400 registered during the whole of 2025.

Trichy recorded around 2,000 EV registrations in the first six months of 2026, compared with 2,900 in the previous year.

The trend indicates that EV adoption is expanding beyond major cities such as Chennai and Coimbatore.Dealers in both cities said middle-income buyers are driving the shift, mainly to cut fuel expenses.

Concerns over crude supply and possible fuel price increases following tensions in West Asia also influenced purchase decisions.

Dealers said enquiries rose sharply after messages about a possible fuel shortage circulated on social media in late February, prompting hesitant buyers to opt for EVs.“Two-wheelers continue to dominate the EV shift, with demand mainly coming from women users who need vehicles for short commutes, school drops, and trips to railway stations and bus stands,” said D Nagenthiran, an automobile dealer in Madurai. “Manufacturers also introduced their usual summer offers, which helped boost sales.”In Trichy, demand for electric cars has also gained momentum.

Showrooms reported that enquiries doubled over the past two months, although not all enquiries converted into purchases.

Monthly EV car sales per showroom increased from around 50 before May to 75-80 after May.“Many customers were keen to exchange their petrol cars for EV models.

Even in rural areas such as Thuraiyur, EV sales performed well in the past two months.

CNG cars, which were earlier preferred mainly by taxi operators, are also seeing interest among private buyers,” said Elango Thiyagarajan, managing director of Kaveri Tata, Trichy.Dealers said improvements in fast-charging technology have helped ease range concerns among buyers.

Some electric cars can now charge up to 80% in less than 30 minutes.

EV car prices in Trichy range from around Rs 9 lakh to Rs 33 lakh (on-road), with driving ranges between 220 km and 500 km per charge.

Compact SUVs and hatchbacks are among the preferred segments.Lower running costs are another major factor.

A petrol two-wheeler travelling 60 km daily in Madurai requires around 45 litres of fuel a month, costing nearly Rs 4,900 at current prices.

An EV covering the same distance consumes around 90 units of electricity, reducing the monthly running expense significantly even under higher domestic power tariff slabs.Policy support has further boosted adoption. “Tamil Nadu has waived permit and registration fees for EVs and provides 100% road tax exemption for battery-operated vehicles till December 2027,” said a senior transport department official.

The 2025-26 state budget also announced a Rs 20,000 subsidy for platform-based gig workers, while PM e-Drive incentives provide support for eligible electric two-wheelers.However, dealers said the current surge could moderate if fuel supply concerns ease. You Can Also Check: Gold Rate in Madurai | Silver Rate in Madurai | Bank Holidays in Madurai | Public Holidays in Madurai | Madurai AQI | Weather in Madurai | Petrol Price in Madurai | Diesel Price in Madurai | CNG Price in Madurai | LPG Price in MaduraiStay updated with the latest Madurai news.
