Trichy: In two separate incidents, Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Trichy city police arrested four people, including a steel shopowner, and secured stolen copper tube worth ₹75,000 from their possession.
The tubes were sold to scrap dealers and a steel shop for a price that was used by thieves to consume liquor and drugs.RPF said a special team was constituted in connection with the theft of copper pipes from railway AC plants.
Early on Monday, the team spotted S Santhosh, 19, from Karumandapam, and a 16-year-old boy near the railway yard.
When the team checked their bag, officials found five pieces of copper tubes.
During an inquiry, the duo confessed that they stole copper pipes from AC units in various railway properties and sold them to a steel shop at E Pudur.Subsequently, the team searched the shop and recovered copper tubes stolen from railway properties.
Shopowner G Maheswaran, 53, was arrested and remanded in judicial custody along with Santhosh.
The juvenile was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) and was admitted to a de-addiction centre at MGMGH.In another incident, Trichy Fort police arrested R Vigneshkumar, 28, and M Kalaiselvan, both from Srirangam, for stealing 56 copper tubes worth ₹28,000 from two banks, a college, a hospital, and commercial outlets in the city in the past 20 days.
