Farmer fights leopard with sickle for 3 mins, survives

Bijnor: A 35-year-old farmer survived a leopard attack in Amroha district after fighting the animal with a sickle for nearly three minutes before it fled into a nearby field, officials said on Tuesday.

Inderpal Singh suffered 22 injuries on his head, left arm, shoulder and back in the attack at Sultanpur Intezam Ali village on Monday.Singh was working in his field when the leopard suddenly pounced on him and tried to drag him towards a fodder field, officials said.

Despite bleeding heavily, he fought back with the sickle he was carrying and managed to force the animal to retreat.

He then reached the village and alerted his family, who took him to district hospital, where he is undergoing treatment.A forest department team led by ranger Rajiv Kumar launched a search operation in the area after the attack and found a leopard cub in a sugarcane field near the spot.

Officials installed a cage and kept the cub there while teams monitored the area for the adult leopard’s movement.

Kumar said villagers had been asked to take precautions while entering fields. “Villagers have been advised to remain alert, and continuous monitoring is being carried out,” he said.Forest officials said leopards often take shelter in sugarcane fields because the crop provides dense cover.
