Dianna Russini has broken her silence.
The former Athletic NFL insider told the New York Times that the fallout from her relationship with New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel has taken a serious toll, both professionally and personally.
Russini, who resigned from her $800,000-a-year role earlier this year amid the controversy, briefly spoke to the Times, which is currently conducting its own investigation into the matter. How has the Mike Vrabel scandal affected Dianna Russini's career? The damage to Russini's career has been considerable.
She left The Athletic before her contract expired on June 30, citing what she called an unbearable "media frenzy" that was spiralling beyond her control."This media frenzy is hurtling forward without regard for the review process The Athletic is trying to complete," Russini wrote in her resignation letter. "Rather than allowing this to continue, I have decided to step aside now.
I do so not because I accept the narrative that has been constructed around this episode, but because I refuse to lend it further oxygen or to let it define me or my career."She had reportedly been in discussions for a new contract at The Athletic when the first set of Page Six photos dropped in April, showing her and Vrabel at a luxury resort in Arizona.
Those images sparked immediate public backlash since both are married to other people.
Russini and Vrabel denied any romantic involvement and claimed friends were with them on the trip, but eyewitnesses disputed that account.Things escalated from there.
On the first day of the 2026 NFL Draft, Page Six published a second batch of photos, this time showing the pair kissing at a New York City bar in 2020.
That was six years before the Arizona photos surfaced, and notably, Russini was just six months away from marrying Shake Shack executive Kevin Goldschmidt at the time.
Vrabel was already married to his wife, Jen.Vrabel, 50, announced shortly after that he would skip part of the draft to enter counseling.
TMZ later reported a boat outing between the two in June 2021, when Russini was pregnant with her first child. What did Dianna Russini tell the New York Times and why does it matter? When the Times reached out to Dianna Russini for comment ahead of publishing their investigation, she responded via text message but asked not to be quoted.
The reporter informed her that since the exchange was never declared off the record, her comments would be included regardless.Russini then emailed The Athletic's publisher and two senior Times editors in an attempt to block her quotes from being printed.
It did not work."This has had a significant impact on my life, both professionally and personally," she told the Times.Notably, she referred to herself as a "former journalist" in her communication, a pointed acknowledgment of how sharply her career has shifted.
The investigation is still ongoing, and per Front Office Sports' Michael McCarthy, no conclusion is imminent.
Some inside the Times building are reportedly growing impatient with the timeline, though top editors have reiterated it is still weeks away.Whether Russini returns to sports media in any meaningful capacity likely depends on what that report ultimately reveals.Get the latest Sports News and Live updates.
