MUMBAI: Central Railway (CR) is set to introduce 12 additional air-conditioned (AC) local train services between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Kalyan, taking the total number of AC services on its main line from 80 to 92.
The move will raise the overall number of AC local services on CR from 108 to 120.The additional AC services are expected to be rolled out soon, with an AC rake that has been lying idle in CR’s fleet for the past two months likely to be pressed into passenger service.
Railway officials said the detailed timetable for the new services will be announced in the coming days.As part of the plan, some existing non-AC suburban services will be withdrawn and replaced with AC locals.
The new services have been scheduled during morning and evening peak hours to cater to commuters travelling between CSMT and Kalyan.Railway officials said the expansion of AC local services is aimed at improving passenger safety and comfort.
With automatic closed doors, AC locals help prevent passengers from travelling on footboards and reduce the risk of accidental falls from moving trains. The move follows the introduction of 14 AC local services on the Harbour line on Maharashtra Day, May 1.
Railway authorities have been gradually increasing the share of AC services in Mumbai’s suburban network as part of a long-term plan to modernise commuter travel. However, the decision to replace existing non-AC services has drawn criticism from some commuters.CR currently operates AC services on both the main and Harbour corridors and has been witnessing a steady rise in patronage, though concerns over affordability and punctuality continue to be raised by sections of commuters. You Can Also Check: Gold Rate in Mumbai | Silver Rate in Mumbai | Bank Holidays in Mumbai | Public Holidays in Mumbai | Mumbai AQI | Weather in Mumbai | Petrol Price in Mumbai | Diesel Price in Mumbai | CNG Price in Mumbai | LPG Price in MumbaiStay updated with the latest Mumbai news.
