Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday observed that govt is obliged to provide compensation before evicting any individual from a land designated for a govt project.
The eviction, in connection to a Singur land, was stayed until July 18.Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya, hearing the plea of eight tenant families occupying land sold to the Railways for a 1,856-km freight corridor, directed the Railways to explain why the compensation was not paid in 2023 despite a court order and ordered the initiation of payment. The tenants had alleged that they had been served an eviction notice, without payment. In 2023, the Railways paid landowners the land price and other dues, plus an additional Rs 5 lakh under its terms.
Das cited notifications under the Railway Land Acquisition Act to argue that tenants are entitled to compensation on a par with landowners. The Railway’s counsel said it had agreed to pay compensation under the 2013 Land Acquisition Act, but the state failed to fix the compensation amount, preventing payment then. You Can Also Check: Gold Rate in Kolkata | Silver Rate in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata | Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Petrol Price in Kolkata | Diesel Price in Kolkata | CNG Price in Kolkata | LPG Price in KolkataStay updated with the latest Kolkata news.
