Yoga has always been about tuning in, to the breath, the body and the mind.
But increasingly, practitioners are also tuning into data.
From AI-powered posture correction and personalised practice plans to smart mats that analyse movement and wearables that track breathing patterns, technology is finding a place alongside the traditional yoga mat.
Experts share how AI is modernising the yoga experience:'Personalised routines and instant feedback are useful for beginners' What was once a practice guided largely by observation, intuition, and the teacher-student relationship is now being supported by algorithms that can monitor movement, measure wellness markers and offer instant feedback. "AI-powered yoga apps and wearables such as smart watches, fitness bands like WHOOP, posture-tracking systems in apps such as Yogain and motion sensors can support yoga practice by monitoring sleep, activity, heart rate, breathing and posture.
They can also provide personalised routines and feedback, making them especially useful for beginners," says Vijay Yadav, co-founder of SarvYogic Health.
For many practitioners, the appeal lies in accessibility.
According to Chavi Singhal, a mind-body wellness coach and founder of Ishva Wellness, AI has the potential to make yoga more personalised and scalable. "Through posture analysis, movement tracking and feedback in real-time, AI-powered platforms can help users achieve improved alignment, monitor progress and ensure consistency when they practice.
It can also recommend sessions based on an individual's fitness level, goals, mobility or time," she says.Yoga is more than metrics: ExpertsExperts caution against reducing yoga to a collection of data points.
Dr Varun Veer, founder of LifeYoga, points out that yoga has always centred on awareness rather than measurement."Yoga has always been a practice of listening.
Long before we had devices measuring our sleep, heart rate, stress levels or daily movement, yogic and Ayurvedic traditions encouraged us to cultivate awareness of the body, observe the mind and pay attention to the subtle signals that arise from within," he says."Health is not merely a collection of measurements.
Ayurveda and yoga have always viewed well-being through a broader lens — one that includes not only the physical body, but also the mind, emotions, habits, environment and overall sense of balance.
Some of the most important aspects of our well-being cannot be captured by a graph or a score."The concern, he adds, is that practitioners may begin relying on algorithms to define what they should feel instead of developing their own awareness. "The opportunity lies in using technology to increase awareness and accessibility, while remembering that numbers are only one part of the story.
A potential risk is allowing algorithms to tell us what our body and mind should be experiencing, instead of developing the sensitivity to listen for ourselves."Chavi adds, "Wearable devices such as fitness trackers, smartwatches, or wellness devices to measure heart rate, breathing, stress, and activity levels.
The AI uses the data to provide a holistic view of wellness and help users understand how yoga impacts their health over time.
The ideal future is one in which technology enhances the yoga experience without diminishing its deeper philosophy.
AI should be considered a tool to help more people get into yoga and sustain it, while human teachers keep adding the wisdom, connection and guidance at the heart of yoga."Popular AI-powered yoga & wellness appsGloDown DogYoga FitFaceYogiNamaste Yoga Asana RebelSmart mats and fits for yogis YogiFi Smart Yoga Mat – AI-powered mat that provides posture correction, alignment feedback and personalised yoga sessions.SmartMat – Sensor-enabled mat that analyses balance, weight distribution and body alignment in real time.Tera Smart Yoga Mat – Connected mat with motion-tracking capabilities and guided workout integration.Intelligent Fitness Mats (used in wellness studios) – Pressure-sensitive mats that track movement patterns and offer performance analytics.Nadi X Smart Yoga Pants – Equipped with sensors and haptic feedback technology that gently vibrates to guide users into correct poses.Wearable X – Creator of smart yoga apparel designed to provide posture and movement guidance.Hexoskin Smart Shirt – Tracks breathing rate, heart rate and movement during yoga and fitness activities.
