Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh Special Task Force has arrested the alleged mastermind behind an illegal cough syrup manufacturing and distribution network operating from Bhopal nearly three months after a raid led to the seizure of over 73,000 bottles, officials said.The accused, Rahul Kushwaha, carrying a reward of Rs 20,000, was arrested from Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala after evading arrest by moving across multiple states.
STF officials said Kushwaha owned the factory at Patel City in Bhopal’s Gandhinagar area, where refilling, repackaging and distribution of intoxicating cough syrups was allegedly being carried out.According to officials, Kushwaha fled Bhopal after learning about the raid and first took shelter in Shimla before moving to Kerala.
Acting on technical surveillance and intelligence inputs, an STF team traced him in Thiruvananthapuram and brought him to Bhopal after obtaining a transit warrant from a local court.Investigators said Kushwaha was the key figure behind the illegal possession and distribution of Onrex and Off Cough Syrup.
During the raid, STF seized 49,920 bottles of Onrex and 23,125 bottles of Off Cough Syrup from the premises.The probe has also uncovered an alleged network of dummy medical firms used to facilitate procurement and distribution.
Officials said Kushwaha, in collusion with other accused, opened firms in Bhopal and Mandideep using identity documents of associates to conceal the operation.They further alleged that transport vehicles belonging to other members of the syndicate were used to supply the cough syrup across the Mahakaushal and Vindhya regions.Kushwaha has been remanded to STF custody until June 27.
