Nagpur: Decorated IPS officer of Maharashtra cadre and 26/11 hero, Vishwas Nangre Patil, was appointed the new police commissioner of Nagpur on Tuesday.
Author of bestselling ‘Mann Mein Hai Vishwas’, Nangre replaces Ravinder Singal, who has been transferred as additional director general of police, anti-corruption bureau, Maharashtra.A 1997-batch officer, Patil is widely known for his extraordinary bravery during the November 26, 2008, terror siege of Mumbai.
As deputy commissioner of police, zone-1 (south Mumbai), he was among the first officers to reach the besieged Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.Armed with a service Glock pistol and initially without a bulletproof vest, Patil led his team into the hotel through the rear under heavy gunfire from Pakistani terrorists, including Ajmal Kasab.Displaying raw courage, he engaged terrorists on the Royal Staircase, hitting one in the leg and pinning them down.
His swift actions helped barricade the attackers from advancing into the Crystal Hall, where a marriage function was underway, saving hundreds of lives.One of Nangre Patil’s bodyguards was killed and another injured in the fierce encounter.
Patil later positioned himself in the hotel’s CCTV control room, providing critical real-time intelligence to senior officers until NSG commandos took over.
For his gallantry, he was awarded the President’s Police Medal for Gallantry in 2015. “Will speak on my vision for Nagpur after assuming charge,” said Nangre Patil while speaking to TOI.Born on June 1, 1973, in Kokrud village of Sangli district, Patil rose from humble rural roots through sheer merit.
He cleared the UPSC Civil Services examination in his first attempt without urban coaching, becoming an inspiration for lakhs of rural youth.Nangre Patil’s illustrious career includes stints as superintendent of police in Latur, Ahmednagar, Pune Rural and Thane Rural, Special IG in Kolhapur and Aurangabad ranges; CP Nashik, and Joint CP (Law & Order), Mumbai.Sources indicate Patil is expected to take charge in Nagpur within a day or two after a formal handover from the outgoing CP Ravinder Singal.
