Panchkula: A 12-year-old girl was pulled to safety after getting trapped in thick slush in the dried-up Kaushalya Dam reservoir at Pinjore, triggering alarm over safety hazards at the site.
Dramatic visuals of the rescue have since gone viral on social media.The incident occurred on Tuesday when children from migrant labourer families, who are temporarily living near the dam, ventured into the exposed reservoir bed to catch fish.
The girl reportedly stepped into a marshy patch in the middle of the dam, where her feet sank deep into the mud, leaving her unable to move.Hearing her cries for help, locals alerted dam authorities.
Employees and residents rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation, managing to pull her out after considerable effort.The girl escaped unhurt and was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was declared fit, averting what could have turned into a tragedy.The episode has once again exposed the risks posed by the drying Kaushalya Dam.
Once brimming with water, the reservoir has shrunk drastically, leaving behind deep, deceptive marshy patches.
With depleting water levels, large-scale fish deaths have also been reported, causing a foul stench in the area.Residents said these hidden slush zones pose a serious threat to anyone entering the reservoir bed and have urged authorities to restrict access and install warning signs.Deputy commissioner Satpal Sharma confirmed that the girl had entered the area while trying to catch fish and got trapped in the mud.
