KOLKATA: At least one person was killed and 25 others were injured after a passenger bus collided with a truck on National Highway-27 in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district on Sunday, with preliminary findings suggesting rain-slick roads may have contributed to the crash.The accident took place in the Ulladabri area, temporarily disrupting traffic on the busy highway as rescue teams rushed to the spot."Local sources have reported at least one death.
The injured persons have been shifted to a hospital and their condition is being monitored," a senior police officer said.Police said the exact cause of the accident was yet to be ascertained, though initial investigations pointed to slippery road conditions caused by rainfall."Prima facie, it seems slippery road conditions due to rainfall may have contributed to the mishap.
However, an investigation has been initiated and all aspects are being examined," the officer added.Reacting to the incident, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari expressed grief over the loss of life and announced financial assistance for the victims' families.
The next of kin of the deceased will receive Rs 5 lakh, while those seriously injured will be given Rs 1 lakh each.
Passengers who sustained minor injuries will receive Rs 50,000.In a social media post, the CM said he was "deeply saddened" by the accident and extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives."My heart goes out to the families who have lost their loved ones in this horrific incident.
